Be Still

The Life Church of Des Plaines

ocean picEx 14:13 “But Moses told the people, ‘Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again.’”

Prov 3:5,10 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 10 Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.”

A Minnesota guy spent $1500 and six months to make a sandwich. This is because he made every ingredient himself. He harvested seawater (for the salt), milked a cow, collected honey, made butter, made bread, killed a chicken, grew vegetables, etc. In an interview, he was asked did this experience change the way he views the way food is gotten. He has a new appreciation for the stuff that we take for granted.

It is because of free trade that we have all these advantages and don’t have…

Change is a Good Thing

You don’t have to fear change when you choose to trust Jesus.

The Life Church of Des Plaines

Ecclesiastes 3 – 1To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

Daniel 2 – 21And he changeth the times and the seasons.

Change is a Good Thing

Change is a Good ThingJust 15 – 20 years ago, listening to music, watching TV and movies, chatting with friends, browsing the interwebs, and reading, used to be distinct activities.  Compass, flashlight, level, decibel meter used to be distinct tools.  Everything I just mentioned can be done using a smartphone.  Lose your house keys?  Phone.  Forget to turn off the lights?  Phone.  Want to unlock the car?  Phone.  Want to see who’s at the door?  Phone.  Want to open a can of corn?  Phone (probably coming soon).  Want to know the price of that same can of corn from 10 other stores within a…

Unresolved Issues

The Life Church of Des Plaines

ap-x-90-395049-unsplashJohn 4:5-8 “Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. 7 Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’ 8 He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.”

Jesus sent 12 guys to get lunch. He wanted to be alone, waiting for that woman. It was a bad time to get water because it was so hot.

John 4:9-19 “The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, ‘You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?’ 10 Jesus replied, ‘If…

One of a Kind

The Life Church of Des Plaines

One of a KindHeb 2:14 “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.”

The phrase ‘one of a kind’ is actually Biblical. We also can say we are all…

When God Gets Sick

The Life Church of Des Plaines

Rev 3:15-20 “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the…

The Source of My Strength

The Life Church of Des Plaines

160808-F-SO188-1088Ex 16:14-21 “And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground. 15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat. 16 This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents. 17 And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less. 18 And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had…

Lessons from Psalm 23

I’m so glad Jesus is my Shepherd!

The Life Church of Des Plaines

schafer-2252308_960_720Psalm 23:1-6 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”

No single psalm has expressed more powerfully man’s confidence in God whose purpose alone gives meaning to life from womb to tomb.

What does Psalm 23 mean to you?
